Manual for Standards and Specifications for World-Class Stations

Development of a comprehensive, standardized technical manual to catalyze the modernization of legacy Indian railway infrastructure into world-class, interoperable multimodal transit hubs.

• Project Context: Most of the Indian railway stations were built over 100 years ago, have limited and aging infrastructure, are located in the middle of cities, and offer enormous potential for re-development and commercial expansion. The Ministry of Railways (MOR) envisaged this potential and decided to upgrade these major stations into world-class properties to meet future demand.
• Design Framework: The first step towards achieving this vision was preparing a Manual for the Standards and Specifications for World Class Stations. We contributed to this comprehensive manual guiding the redesign of aging stations into modern, efficient hubs. The Manual provides a comprehensive set of standards for redesigning the railway stations.
• Architectural & Environmental Integration: It facilitates the designer's architectural vision to focus on the efficient movement of passengers with the convenience of transfers and interchanges with other modes of transportation, customer safety, security, comfort, and convenience. It ensures maintaining quality design (architectural quality, innovation, aesthetics, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness), urban integration and preservation, and environmentally responsible design with the use of materials and resources. The guidelines strictly emphasize passenger movement harmonization (including vertical transit systems like Escalators), safety, multimodal integration, and environmentally responsible design.
